I will give you my easy-to-follow, step-by-step process for franchising a business. Along the way you’ll get most of the tools, templates and checklists that I have developed.
But, as some of the templates are for things that you can also get from your lawyer or accountant I give you the opportunity to go to them if you wish.
If you do not wish to use other consultants, I also have simple templates for my members for these actions and give you details on how to use them. Most of my clients prefer to purchase my heavily discounted templates and use my expert franchise lawyers and other franchise expert consultants then possibly get their lawyers or accountants to check the finished product. They find that it is very much more cost-effective .
I give instructions and a look at examples of real franchises that you can learn from. From there you need to apply what you’ve learnt to design and deliver your own systems to franchise your business. You will have to work on your own business to put the systems and processes in place – after all, no-one knows your business like you do!
But don’t forget that as you take the first of my four (or ‘small, simple) steps, I will be there to answer your questions to take as much of the pressure off as possible. So let’s begin!
Each unit contains specific insights on different aspects of how to take your business from a single outlet to a multi-outlet franchised business. The earlier units will guide you through my 3D system in some detail and give you a number of actions to take. Please note that many years of experience have shown us that following the process sequentially from beginning to end gives the most successful results.
It may take you varying times to cover the actions listed. The length of time it takes you will depend on the time you have to put into each task and the complexity of your business. It will also depend on how experienced you are in business as a whole.
Relax though… you don’t have to do it all in one hit.
You can choose to go faster or slower if you want. If you fall behind it doesn’t matter as you’ll always have access to the information. You can re-visit, and go at the pace that suits you.
Experience over more than three decades in this business has shown me that by following a simple step-by-step procedure most business owners will be able to franchise their businesses and start selling their new franchises within about 12 to18 months. If you choose to accelerate the process, this can be as quick as six months and in some cases even sooner. More complex businesses may take a little longer.
‘Franchise Simply®’ offers different levels of membership ranging from the Do It Yourself Program to the Done for You Program where we come in and do most of the work for you, completing it in as little as 90 days.
The higher levels which offer detailed support with a number of experts specialized in branding, corporate structures, budgets, franchise law, territories, operations and procedure manuals, recruitment and training. This, in addition to access to the units generally help business owners to go through the process faster and more successfully.
Great! You’re in exactly the right place. The information we are going to be teaching is as useful for someone who already understands business and franchising, all the way down to beginners.
For those who are a little more advanced, you’ll find the expert tips and interviews keep you up to date. The processes we offer are a more streamlined and effective way of franchising than the old-fashioned analogue type consulting model and you will find you can get through them faster.
For those who know nothing except for what you’ve learnt from attending the occasional seminar and seeing all the franchise businesses out there, I’ll explain everything for you.
Do I license or franchise my business?
If you are considering licensing or franchising in Australia it is important to understand which will best provide you with the control and protection required for your business, especially in relation to respective franchising pros and cons.
This is different for overseas franchising where legislation varies.
When deciding, you need to think about anything which may impact the ultimate value and business salability in Australia or in a country by country basis. There are numerous factors I would be willing to discuss with you.
1. Definition of a licence as opposed to a franchise
As described by the ACCC (Australian Competition & Consumer Commission).
The easy ‘Four Part Licence vs. Franchise test’ (made up of five questions) states if the answer to any 4 of these questions to your business is “Yes” then it is a franchise:
- Is there an agreement? (Written, oral or implied)
- Is there an association with a trademark?
- Is there an initial or continuing fee?
- a) Is there a system to follow?
b) Is there a Marketing Plan to follow?
For further details, I recommend you download a copy of the ACCC Franchising Code of Conduct.
2. Which system will suit you best?
Understanding the advantages and disadvantages of will help you to make up your mind:
Advantages of a franchise
- Working Capital – each time a franchise is sold you receive a lump sum, as opposed to possibly investing additional capital.
- Quality of People – you attract people who like your brand and therefore can partner with franchisees with a high level of commitment, who respect the organisation and leadership within your support office.
- Leverage – the system gives you the ability to delegate numerous tasks you would normally do yourself.
- Work on Big Picture – you get time to do this as you have created the circumstance to elevate your business to the next level, delegate the daily tasks, giving you the time to work on growth.
- Group Buying Power – can be significant as collective purchasing positively impacts your bottom line whilst increasing revenue streams.
- Build Brand and Business Value – your asset significantly increases in value with heightened brand integrity and measurable expansion or exit strategy.
- Creates Numerous Exit Strategies – with an array of prospective franchise group purchasers, you acquire a better ROI for further expansion and investment or with the view of selling.
Perceived disadvantages of a franchise can be:
- Lose Some Autonomy – you may not have as much diversity or flexibility to “chop and change” due to consideration of your franchise partners.
- Accountability – an elevated level of scrutiny may ensue if franchise partners are seeking value for money (this can also be an advantage because continuity and consistency is in everyone’s best interest).
- Systemize and Documentation – some view this as arduous but, in my opinion, accurate, seamless processes are advantageous because they ensure a ‘well-oiled machine’, and the ability to delegate more easily and invest time towards ongoing expansion.
- Time – a franchise program can take time and work to put in place although the process can be expedited relatively quickly., Although it is critical the process isn’t rushed to acquire sustainable business growth.
If you would like clarification or further assistance with legal documentation, whether for a licence or a franchise, then we can help you further.
If you have not done so, I strongly recommend you take steps to secure your intellectual property, particularly trademark/s etc., as soon as possible. Again we can assist with this.

This can be so varied. It depends on the nature of the product you are selling, how many franchisees with separate outlets you are able or want to put in place and how the system is delivered to them.
The one thing I can tell you for sure. If you are a good franchisor with a fabulous product and have good work ethics, looking after your franchisees well, you will be able to ask for what you want!
Absolutely! Because you will be learning lots of different tools, skills and secrets from all the aspects of the franchise process, you will be able to apply these in any business that meets our suitability criteria.
It doesn’t matter if you are an accountant, chiropractor, coach, information marketer, internet marketer, swimming pool sales person, real estate developer or hairdresser. There is a way to apply this information to massively leverage your business.
